What is Batik?
Minimize

Batik is a method of decorating fabric using wax as a resist. Wax is heated in a pot and then applied to the fabric using tjantings, brushes or home made/found tools. The wax acts as a resist to dyes and therefore prevents colour from penetrating the fabric. The design can be built up by successive layers of wax and dyes. The crackle that is so characteristic of batik is created by cracking the wax and allowing the dye to penetrate. A variety of dyes can be used – Procion cold water dyes work well as does Indigo, rust & tannic.

Tixor Malam Batik Wax Pot – This batik pot is the one professionals use. It has a shallow bowl that holds up to 0.3 litres of wax. This means you can leave shorter tools and stamps in the wax, without the worry that they will sink in. It has 6 openings to rest tools/tjantings. The temperature is controllable upto 135'c.
