Batik on Paper

Batik on Paper

You will need

Chinese water colour paper
Procion MX cold water dyes
Tools for batik (Tjantings, cardboard tubes, rug canvas, sponges, brushes etc.)
Brushes for wetting paper & applying dyes
Newspaper
Batik pot
Wax
Hairdryer
Iron
Estate agency board or tin foil on a wad of newspaper.

Steps

1) Using hot wax, draw your design onto paper. Remember that where you draw will stay white.

2) Peel the paper away from the foil/board.

3) Dab the paper with water using a clean foam brush.

4) Paint on dyes – it is best just to use two colours as more colours merging can look muddy.

5) Place newspaper on top of painted paper to remove excess liquid. Turn painted paper over and repeat on the other side. Leave to dry or for speed dry with a cool hairdryer – being careful not to melt the wax.

6) Repeat step 1 – now where you paint wax will remain the painted on colour.

7) Repeat steps 2-4 (using two different coloured dyes.)

8) Iron to melt the wax and create a ‘shiny’ finish.
